Do You Believe You Are Eating Healthy?

I am going crazy. I have been a vegetarian for the past 15 years. Three years ago I stopped eating fish and struggled to eat vegan. Could not drink black coffee or give up goat cheese. That ended my vegan ways. I was eating carbs. Salad, veggies, fruits, pasta, bread, pizza. I admit I love my chocolate too! In December 2014 I felt inflamed from within. I have always believed that eating is an experiment and that I had to listen to my body and eat only when I was hungry. I added fish back into my life three months ago, eliminated the pizza and felt better. I thought I was eating a clean diet.

Then I read the book Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs and Sugar – Your Brain’s Silent Killers by Dr. David Perlmutter. I discovered that my brain needed healthy oils, butter, eggs and that I must stop eating gluten. Gluten is a protein in wheat, barley and rye which our bodies are sensitive to. Dr. Perlmutter writes in his book, “Gluten is what I call a “silent germ.” It can inflict lasting damage without your knowing it.” Which means no bread, no pizza, no pasta!

Then I read up on my body type which, is Ayurveda, The Perfect Balance Diet by Lissa Coffey. My body type is Tri-Dosha – kapha (50%), pitta (25%) and vata (25%) which informed me that I needed to eat seasonally. Avoid ice-cold beverages and food. Add lemon to my water. Avoid frozen, canned, processed and left-over foods. Avoid foods with caffeine; soda, coffee and tea. Choose organic fresh fruits and vegetables. Almonds, cashews and walnuts are an excellent source of protein. Arise at 6AM, meditate, exercise and eat by 10AM, lunch by 1PM and dinner at 6 to 7PM then bed at 10PM.

Now I was on a roll, I looked up my blood type diet, which is ‘B’ and read the book, Live Right for Your Type by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo to learn that there were beneficial foods, neutral foods and foods to avoid for my blood type. Most of the foods to avoid I was consuming, especially tomatoes. I can eat olive oil, some vegetables, certain fish, goat cheese, feta and cottage, skim milk and yogurt. Only kidney and navy beans and black walnuts. Of all things, I could eat rice. Avoid tomatoes, wheat, pasta, nuts, seeds.

During this process I went to the book launch of Vani Hari, author of the book The Food Babe Way. It’s terrifying to learn about what she has discovered about what is in the foods we eat willingly. Organic is a must as well as reading labels, and eliminating toxins and adding a few tasty alternatives to experience a healthy lifestyle and eating clean. GMO (genetically modified organisms) are big with her as well as the ingredients listed and not listed in our foods. Her book sets you up to break free from the hidden toxins in your food, lose weight and to get healthy in just 21 days.

I discovered that reading labels is upsetting only because you discover and become aware of what you have been eating all along that is toxic to your body. “Canola oil seems to be in everything and is the worst possible oil to consume as it is extracted from rapeseed plants that have been genetically modified,”states Vani. The Food Babe Way is the best book out today that explains the toxins in our foods, the different types of diets and give us alternative means to change our unhealthy way of eating.

I decided to eat gluten free, enjoy wild fish, organic vegetables and fruits. Enjoy organic coffee with organic skim milk, organic goat cheese, almonds and walnuts as a treat. I will continue to bless my food, especially when I eat out because I will never know what I am eating. I already meditate upon awakening so I am one step ahead. I adapted to the up at 6AM, breakfast at 10AM, lunch at 1PM and dinner by 6 to 7PM routine for the past month which works for me.

As a society filled with abundance in the food stores, it is time to educate ourselves on what foods we are consuming and what foods we are feeding our children. There is toxins in foods that are processed. From our water to our toothpaste we are consuming ingredients that are toxic. Start reading food labels today to learn what is creating havoc in your body. Soda, Fast Foods, GMO’s are filled with toxins, its time to eliminate them.
