The tomato is the red edible fruit of the plant, known as Solanum lycopersicum. Originated in the Andes in South America, it started being used as food in Mexico. The red fruit was introduced to the Americas when it was colonized by the Spanish. Its beauty lies in its versatility. It can be eaten raw as used in salads and drinks or it can be used as the base of a dish as in pastas, sauces, and curries. The native versions of the tomatoes found in South and Central America are yellow in color and they resemble cherry tomatoes.

There are different types of tomatoes like the tomberries, wild, slicing or globe, beefsteak, plum, oxheart, grape, pear, and campari tomatoes. Tomatoes come in different colors like black, purple, orange, yellow, and pink, white, orange although the most common are the red ones. Heirloom tomatoes are those that have been passed down from generation to generation and are preferred to hybrid because of its flavor and taste. Heirloom plants are unique in that they are well adapted to survive in specific climates and soil conditions and have also developed resistance to diseases and pests.

Tomatoes are very important to have in our daily diet as it’s a super food packed with nutrients. It contains a large number of beneficial antioxidants and nutrients such as lycopene, folic acid, lutien, beat-carotene, alpha-lipoic acid, and choline. They are have a rich supply of vitamin C and A, potassium, calcium, and folic acid. The presence of these nutrients helps in controlling blood sugar and preventing vasodilation and retinopathy. They also help to preserve nerve and brain tissue. The presence of choline helps with learning and memory, better sleep, and muscle movement. Adequate and sufficient consumption of tomatoes helps to decrease risk of cancer, diabetes, blood pressure, improves heart health. It is good for the skin and for constipation. It is extremely helpful during pregnancy and depression.

Uses of Tomatoes

Tomatoes can be grown anywhere in the world and have become an important part of most cuisines in the world. They are easy to preserve since they are acidic. They are also dried in the sun and sold as sundried tomatoes in jars with oil or in bags. They are available as whole canned, paste, puree, and ketchup. They are extremely popular in salsas or as pickles. They can be eaten fresh or fire roasted, pickled, or fried. They are used as beauty aids to soften skin and soothe sunburn because of the acid in them.

Tomatoes are an important ingredient in world cuisine and must be included in your diet not merely for its taste but also for its health benefits.
